THIS little book is an attempt to con- trast fairly the methods which were employed by British and German tråders in China before the war. Credit will be given either side where credit seems due. Although rather full measure of praise is meted out to the British side in this book, it is not to be taken as a brief that we are to rest on our laurels, but more in the spirit of a few cheery words by the wayside, and as an incentive to fresh efforts by all Britishers engaged in Chinese trade at home and abroad. I hope that by giving a true account of the manner in which German business has been carried on in the Far East the book will help British Manu- facturers and Merchants at home to realise that they have been trading on the brink of a precipice.
